I imagine the life of a fashion assistant might sometimes feel a little absurd, a little dramatic, a little like... a musical perhaps? In a fitting turn of events, everyone's favourite film about fashion publishing, The Devil Wears Prada, is being made into a musical. Here's everything we know.
First of all, the production has been in the works for a while, nine years to be exact. It is based off of Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling 2003 novel but leans heavily on the 2009 film, starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, as its source material. So yes, in case you're wondering, that cerulean sweater monologue could very well be adapted into a song-and-dance number. We would be so lucky.
What else? While there's no word on who will play Andy Sachs, we do know Vanessa Williams from Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives will star as the formidable Miranda Priestly.
Meanwhile, Elton John is responsible for the score, with singer-songwriter Shaina Taub in charge of its lyrics. There will be an accompanying book by Kate Wetherhead, and three-time Tony recipient Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the production.
So when can you see The Devil Wears Prada musical? Australian audiences will have to hop on a plane, unfortunately. It was originally intended for Broadway, and maybe it will get there. For now though, the production is headed to the West End, where it will open at the Dominion Theatre in London in October 2024.
There will also be a summer run of the musical at Theatre Royal Plymouth for the month of July.
I guess we're all travelling to the UK this year? Tickets to the production of The Devil Wears Prada are on sale now. Head to the Dominion Theatre and Theatre Royal Plymouth websites to secure your seats. That is all.
