The first trailer for the new Danny Boyle Sex Pistols Hulu series has dropped, with the teaser offering a first glimpse at the drama series. Simple titled Pistol, the show looks at the punk band’s anarchic rise during the emergence of punk in the 1970s British music scene.

Who are the Sex Pistols?

The Sex Pistols became a global hit, gaining notoriety for their first single Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, released in 1977. With the backing of fellow punk icon Vivienne Westwood and manager Malcolm McLaren, the band was to become a symbol of changing attitudes towards music, government and the monarchy.

What can we expect from Boyle's Pistol?

In the trailer, we see Johnny Rotten (portrayed by Anson Boon) and bassist Sid Vicious (louis Patridge) conversing about the state and downfall of the British establishment, accompanied by archival news footage concerning both the monarchy and police brutality. Footage of the band is interpolated alongside this, with even Westwood (Talulah Riley) making an appearance in the teaser, which you can watch below.

While speaking to The Guardian in late 2021, Boyle explained the significance of the Sex Pistols and their long-lasting impact on British culture.

“It is the detonation point for British street culture where ordinary young people had the stage and vented their fury and their fashion,” said Boyle. “Everyone had to watch and listen and everyone feared them or followed them.

Pistol is based on Lonely Boy, a 2017 memoir written by the Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones (portrayed by Toby Wallace in Pistol), with the adaptation directed by Boyle co-written by Craig Pearce and Frank Cottrell-Boyce. However, there has been some backlash at the development of the series with Johnny Rotten himself pushing back against its creation. Rotten’s former bandmates took him to court to attain the rights of Sex Pistols music for the series, with Rotten ultimately losing his bid to cease its usage in Pistol.

Who is else is cast in Pistol?

Appearing alongside Boon, Partridge and Riley are Thomas Brodie-Sangster as McLaren, Christian Lees as Glen Matlock and Maise Williams as prominent punk figure, Jordan.

When will Pistol be available to stream in Australia?

Pistol is slated for a global release on May 31, available on streaming platform Hulu.
