Daisy Edgar-Jones switches out romance for music in new biopic portraying Carole King

When you hear the name Daisy Edgar-Jones, the first image your mind conjures up is probably a sultry brunette at university, smoking a cigarette with smouldering eyes and a velvet floor-length dress, thanks to the renowned and somewhat tortured love story by everyone's favourite Irish author and screenwriter, Sally Rooney. Now, Edgar-Jones is changing gears. Variety has reported that she will play Carole King in the broadway based musical biopic entitled Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. The biopic will be based on King's prolific life and songwriting career and will feature many of her hit songs which Sony has now secured the rights to.

Whether or not you would have picked this as Edgar-Jones' next role, Carole King has given her a stamp of approval. In an interview with Variety, King said of Jones: “Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognised as myself when I was younger. She’s a tremendous talent and I know she’s going to give a great performance.”

The act is tried and tested, with the broadway musical featuring many of King's songs including One Fine Day, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, I Feel the Earth Move, and You’ve Got a Friend. When it closed in October 2019, it had been performed more than 2,400 times, running for over five years. King's legacy exists among those musical greats such as Dolly Parton and Celine Dion.

Who will be involved?

The biopic will be directed by Lisa Cholodenko, who will also be working on the script, along with Stuart Blumberg. This will make for their second project together, having co-written Oscar nominated 2010 family drama The Kids Are All Right. Tom Hanks is set to produce the film.

So, can Edgar-Jones sing? The answer is, YES. The breakout star has worked on other musical endeavours this year, with Hulu mini-series acting across from Andrew Garfield, Under the Banner of Heaven.
