"My shop is an extension of what I was doing in the subway stations, breaking down the barriers between high and low art.'' - Keith Haring
Chalked on the streets of New York to transforming New York Subways into billboards, there is no other individual who has been more relevant and prominent in shaping counter culture and pop art than the highly stylised work of Keith Haring.
Prolific, progressive and political, Keith Haring made art that was accessible and could be experienced by all. And now, truly standing the test of time, Haring's iconic drawings will be available to wear on a shoe with the new Converse x Keith Haring capsule collection made available on converse.com.au.
The collection has Haring's work translated onto Converse's classic footwear styles from the Chuck 70, Chuck Taylor All Star, Pro Leather as well as the Converse Run Star Hike. Extending the collaboration to apparel, the collection remains accessible and optimistic, habouring the attitude of Haring and the essence behind what informed his work throughout the 80s.
"Without the creativity, grit, and optimism of the past—All Stars wouldn't have the inspiration, stories and tools to break the barriers of tomorrow... Haring's signature pop art style embodied the belief that people can change the world through creativity. A driving force through Haring's career was ensuring his work not only advocated for the oppressed by uplifting them, but that it remained accessible to all people," Converse states.
An art school drop out to one of the worlds most celebrated and distinguishable artists, the collaboration also pays respect and homage in remembering the artist and his prolific work that emerged and helped shape an important part of New York subculture, along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol back in the 80s.
Converse x Keith Haring collection is available online at converse.com.au and all Converse stores throughout Australia & NZ.
