If you consider yourself an Instagram interiors maven, you would have certainly come across the eclectic New York-based design company Cold Picnic. Known for its colourful and eccentric home textiles, the brand's eye-catching designs and colour palettes have taken over our social media feeds. Now, in the ultimate pop-culture and interiors crossover, Cold Picnic has released a new collection inspired by the Studio Ghibli character, Ponyo.
The main character in Hayao Miyazaki's film of the same name, Ponyo is a fish that transforms herself into a human girl, aptly dubbing their Spring 2021 collection as, The Goldfish. Co-founders of Cold Picnic Phoebe Sung and Peter Buer have set out on a mission to evoke childlike joy and bring playfulness to any space through their latest designs. The Goldfish collection features five hand-tufted rugs, each with names that pay homage to the iconic animation – The Goldfish and Her Boy, A Village Under Water, Goddess of Mercy, Submarine in the Deep and Submarine. In true Cold Picnic style, the rugs feature accented irregular shapes complimented by shades of taupe, aquamarine and cherry pink; a reference to the film’s ocean setting as well as Ponyo’s adorable appearance.

Taking to Instagram, the creative duo revealed the inspiration behind their latest collection, adding; "The lookbook continues our exploration of homes we love under quarantine, styled by their owners and filled with our rugs. Not only does it feel like the safest way to highlight spaces we enjoy, it also feels like the most natural and personal way to show our rugs in another person’s home."
2021 is already shaping up to be a busy year for the new era of Studio Ghibli, with the release of the studio's latest film, Earwig And The Witch, under the direction Hayao Miyazaki's son – Goro Miyazaki – earlier this month. While there's no word on whether Cold Picnic has any plans to draw inspiration from the latest Studio Ghibli film anytime soon, you can begin by shopping The Goldfish collection on their official site.
