Beauty and technology are an unlikely match that at once don't seem to have much to do with each other, but also make perfect sense. There have been a few examples 2022 has given us, Filters, AI Art, beauty NFT'S and now, blockchain.
In a world first, iconic beauty brand Clarins is coming out with some very futuristic technology that allows people to trace where their products are coming from using blockchain. They're doing this through an initiative they're calling T.R.U.S.T, which stands for traceability, responsibility, uniqueness, security and transparency.
This type of relationship between customer and product has always been inherent to the brand, launching the 'Client Card' back in 1968 which offered a line of communication, access and transparency with Clarins. It only makes sense that 60 years later, the brand has continuously kept this ethos at the core of everything it does, and the T.R.U.S.T initiative is yet another extension of that.
With 30 traceable products already live and a goal to reach 100 products in 2023, this is only the beginning for traceable beauty. Here, we're sharing everything you need to know about the new platform, how it works, and what information you'll be able to find.
What will you be able to find on the T.R.U.S.T platform?
T.R.U.S.T is a traceability system that allows beauty consumers to access the following using blockchain technology:
- All steps in the manufacturing process: where the formulas were prepared, date and place of packaging, quality control;
- The plant-based ingredients the product contains: geographical origin, harvesting method, and Clarins certifications associated with how they are sourced;
- Behind the scenes and Clarins “savoir-faire” via visuals and testimonies from our factory in Pontoise (France), where formulas are created and products are manufactured.
What is ‘Blockchain’?
And what does it have to do with my gentle foaming exfoliating cleanser? Blockchain is a technology used to store and transmit information. It is transparent, safe and does not have a centralised control system. It forms a database that records secured exchanges between its users, from the beginning, and then transmits this information.
How does T.R.U.S.T work?
Suppliers and producers alike are the ones who share information directly on Clarins' T.R.U.S.T. platform. Once entered in the system, this information becomes tamper-proof: blockchain technology certifies their authenticity, without allowing anything to be modified.
Clarins T.R.U.S.T clients can access the traceability platform from the product page via QR code. They will then be able to enter the product's batch code. Clients will then see product information about their product's journey from the formula, packaging and quality control.
Going even deeper still, people will be able to dive into the heart of the formula, learning about the sourcing of each plant found in the product and how the plants are produced. They can even find what role the ingredients play in a product's formula.
You can shop Clarins product range and learn more about the initiative on clarins.com.au. The initiative is set to launch on 14th December, 2022.
