Paris is a city entrenched in romantic ideals – from the grandeur of its Belle-Epoque architecture to its long and lauded history as a literary bohemia – its a place where salaciously romantic gestures never feel out of place. Heritage French fashion house Christian Dior are purveyors of this ideal, playing into their city's lore, while simultaneously subverting its stereotypes. Through the reinterpretation of 1950s house motifs and hallmark Gothic codes, Dior explores the sacred connections and locations that unite them with the French capital in their Spring Summer 23 collection.
Inspired by Florentine noblewomen, we see a striving towards reinvention, our preconceived ideas of femininity juxtaposed with those of the contemporary French woman. Maria Grazia Chiuri is an arbiter of modern feminine dressing, a notion no longer confined to the narrow definitions of a bygone age where statues of fertility goddesses and Aphrodites were idolised for their form and sensuality.
For the pages of our March Resilience issue, model Tomiris Ismankulova is lensed by Holly Gibson, holding her own against a backdrop of some of the city's most iconic architecture. It's a reminder that the quintessential French woman has remained, as enduring as the archaic city from whence they came.
