Chloë Sevigny has been a fashion icon for decades

Yes, we all know our Alexa Chung's and our Kate Moss's, perhaps even the present-day Bella Hadid's and Zendaya's, but American actress, model and style icon, Chloë Sevigny, is pretty much the poster child for the modern 'It girl'. A muse to designers like Marc Jacobs, a collaborator on collections with brands like Opening Ceremony, and a plentiful indie film career to boot. She first broke onto the scene when she met aspiring screenwriter Harmony Korine in 1993, who would cast her in his controversial mid-90s independent movie, Kids, and was soon after dubbed the 'It girl of the New York party scene' by American author Jay McInerney in a profile piece that spanned seven pages.

Though she's never claimed the title of muse or 'It girl' herself, Sevigny's eclectic, playful fashion sense and daring career choices certainly set her apart from the rest of the young party-goers and actresses of the late 90s and early 2000s in New York and London. Acting in mostly independent films, such as American Psycho, Party Monster, Dogville, Love & Friendship and Lizzie, she firmly placed herself on the map as an actress with serious chops – even receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the age of 25 for her role as Lana Tisdel in the 1999 biographical drama Boy's Don't Cry. More recently, she's cemented herself as a icon of the screen, starring as one of the 'swans' in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and opposite Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch in Monsters.

In the fashion world, she's something of a mythical character. Fronting campaigns for Loewe, Miu Miu to Chloé – there's a reason why hundreds lined up to peruse Sevigny's wardrobe garage sale, or why we fawned over her incredibly chic nuptials. Here, we've gathered some of our favourite looks from Chloe Sevigny over the years, still as effortlessly stylish in the 2020s as she was in the 90s.
