2023 was a breakout year in film for ex-Riverdale High alumnus Charles Melton. The season seven finale of the hit CW show may have only premiered last August, but already Melton has found his feet in the world of feature films – his breakout role as Joe Yoo in Netflix's May, December securing him Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations, and even propagating some proper Oscar buzz.
But while he may have missed out on the Oscars this year, Melton is already looking onward and upward – now in negotiations to feature in an as-yet-untitled war film from filmmakers Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) and Ray Mendoza.
Read everything we know so far about the film, below.
What is the film about?
Details about the plot of the film are yet to be released, but we know that the script was co-written by directors Garland and Mendoza. The project will reunite the two, who recently worked together on A24's Civil War, where Mendoza served as the military supervisor, and Garland directed.
Who is in the cast?
It's still too early to tell which actors will be officially attached to the project, but it's sounding like Melton might be just one of an ensemble cast assembled for the film by producers.
Deadline reported yesterday that: "In recent weeks, it seemed pretty clear this was the film he [Melton] was zeroing in on following a meeting with the filmmakers that looks to have gone over very well. The film is expected to be an ensemble piece and with Melton likely in place, insiders say the remaining cast should come together quickly in order to get in production later this year."
When will it be released?
The film is still in early stages of production, so there is no release date set as of yet. But we'll keep you updated here as we know more.
