Punk princesses and eccentric girls. Virginie Viard presents her Autumn Winter 20 Haute Couture collection for Chanel.
A new direction. While the Spring Summer 20 Haute Couture collection was heavily influenced by the school girls and uniforms at the abbey at Aubazine, the place where Gabrielle Chanel had resided as a child - for AW 20 however, Viard wanted to travel elsewhere. “I like working like this, going in the opposite direction of what I did last time. I wanted complexity, sophistication.”

Inspired by rich nights and a desire for shimmering opulence and jewellery, this time, the collection was a focus on Karl.
“I was thinking about a punk princess coming out of ‘Le Palace’ at dawn. With a taffeta dress, big hair, feathers and lots of jewellery. This collection is more inspired by Karl Lagerfeld than Gabrielle Chanel. Karl would go to ‘Le Palace’, he would accompany these very sophisticated and very dressed up women, who were very eccentric too.” - Virginie Viard.
The collection shoot and film both captured by Mikael Janssson features Australian face and house muse Adut Akech and model Rianne Van Rompaey. A series of colour vs black and white shots morph into vintage nostalgia-esque montages, all the while showcasing the beautiful craftsmanship of the Haute Couture creations.

The rock princess beauty looks feature a combination of punk hair and heavy eyeliner, mixed with flowing locks, tiaras and plum lips. Romantic with an edge.
The 30 look intimate collection features signature tweed pieces from three-piece suiting, elongated coats and dresses enriched with flower embroidery. We see party moments in the form of cocktail dresses, ball skirts, taffeta and overlaying black, white and pink lace. Ribbon tie-up shoes for an added touch, perfect for dancing the night away. Select looks are even accompanied by pieces from Chanel High Jewellery collections.
Sophisticated, eccentric, ultra-rock punk and romantic. This is the Chanel Autumn Winter 20 Haute Couture woman.
