For Coach's Fall 2022 show, NYC youth culture was evoked through slouchy fits and punk motifs. Uptown, Carolina Herrera's Wes Gordon is paying tribute to the Herrera woman. A nod to the loyalists and the newcomers, Fall 2022 was all about the moment.
Because that's who the Herrera woman is, the moment. And not in a Gen-Z, TikTok slang kind of way. She has been the moment since Mrs. Herrera's first runway show in 1980, and today, Gordon continues to bear the torch. The first couple of looks give us a taste of the Herrera legacy, with the puffed sleeves she has always favoured, and then it is a complete throwback – just for a moment – with the introduction of a full, belted fuchsia moiré ball skirt paired with a fitted white button down channeling the brands DNA.
To follow, Gordon reinterprets these silhouettes and rebuilds them for the younger crowd. Think, less first ladies and more ladies who might go dancing after dinner with hemlines raised to the upper thigh, adorned with oversized bows and sequins, and strings of glittering beads, the same which embellish skin-tight catsuits with plunging necklines. The ball skirts of the Herrera era are split at the front, revealing trousers underneath and layered with cardigans, architectural bodices, and floating bra cups.
There is an ample offering of joy within the collection. Searingly bright punches of colour are offered in red, marigold, and fuchsia to ignite playfulness, while plissé tulle added drama and grandeur in the final looks, which featured exaggerated necklines, extravagant trains, and to finish, a navy and black tulle coat to ensure the moment was made. High society is reframed for the contemporary wearer.
