Colour master. On April 27 Bvlgari hosted it’s 6th annual Art Award Gala dinner at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where Melbourne-based painter Tomislav Nikolic was awarded the 2017 Bvlgari Art Award for his piece, Just before the most significant events, people are particularly prone to deny the possibilities of the future. Declared one of Australia’s greatest colour painters by Art Gallery of NSW director Dr Michael Brand, the self-taught artist’s works allude to the colour mastery of Rothko – vivid, each work possessing a lit-from-within quality. Awarded annually to support mid-career Australian painters, the prize is worth $80 000. Nikolic’s award-winning painting has been acquired by the gallery, which will hold a residency for the artist in Rome.
