When Matthieu Blazy was appointed to helm Bottega Veneta last November, just one week after the news that Daniel Lee – the man responsible for the revival of the brand – was abruptly stepping down, the fashion industry spiralled into a torpedo of speculation about what Blazy's Bottega would look like. Fast forward to February 2022, where Blazy's first collection for the brand would debut, and it was clear that the Belgian designer was intent on forging his own path right out of the gate. For his follow-up campaign for Bottega Veneta's Fall 2022 collection, it would appear he's doubling down on the sentiment.
"Bottega Veneta was created by a collective of artisans. This is the history, and this is how we approached the campaign: together, with many different ways of seeing." Blazy said of the campaign.
For Fall 2022, a collective of creatives come together to realise the vision of the collection. Photographers, cinematographers, and models form the lens and the canvas for Blazy's Foundation Collection, moving from backstage at San Fedele in Milan, moving to the Horst Festival in Belgium, and returning back to Italy's souther coast to finish.
Through 41 still and moving images, the campaign was shot over a number of weeks as the creative team's relationship developed as they travelled. Blazy worked with several young photographers with no prior experience shooting fashion, alongside established photographers and cinematographers to bring the vision to life.
Our own Emma Balfour stars in the images, alongside Rhenny Alade, Mariaclara Boscono, Adamu Bulus, Anok Yai, and more, lensed by photographers Malick Bodian, Solène Şahmaran Gün, Francois Halard, Sander Muylaert, and Louise and Maria Thronfeldt. The images are accompanied by moving images by Benoit Debie, Gretar Gunnlaugsson, and Luca Werner.
"Bottega Veneta is in essence pragmatic because it is a leather good company. Because it specialises in bags it is about movement, of going somewhere; there is fundamentally an idea of craft in motion. It is style over fashion in its timelessness. That is part of its quiet power." Blazy noted in a press release.
