I’ll follow you. Actor Bijou Gracie Henry is the girl you need to know.
Bijou Gracie Henry, a performer, painter and self-proclaimed lover of "rainy days and funky clothes" is akin to quicksilver, moving with fluid agility through space, both physically and energetically. Perhaps this liquid disposition was gained whilst growing up in multiple locations on Australia’s northern coastline, or maybe it is inherently her own. Either way, our prediction is it’s going to take her far.
“My childhood was one of movement, by the time I was eleven years old I’d had eleven different homes. I’ve always moved rapidly from one thing to the next, even back then.”
This year, the young actor touched down just in time to land the lead role in ABC iview’s five-part new series, Deadlock. Cast as Laila, alongside a group of fresh Australian faces, Henry brings to life the aftermath of a tragic accident, providing a darker vision of teenagehood. Having been offered the part after her first ever audition, and subsequently living the reality of every aspiring actor’s wildest dreams, Bijou takes it in her stride. She is ready to laugh at the absurdity of her last few months – a whirlwind of emotional scenes, shoot days bleeding into nights and a panel at Splendour in the Grass – while owning her path to the present moment.
“I’m proud of my work ethic. This was my first job, and it carried a lot of pressure. I’m proud of the fact I could help make the show the creators envisioned.”
“My personal style is seeing something and thinking ‘that is the most ridiculous piece of clothing I have ever seen’ and then promptly buying it.”
A refreshing juxtaposition of playfulness and vulnerability, Henry’s already harnesses an eloquent view of what success means to her. That is, “having the time, money and support to do the things I’m passionate about”.
The actor seems to fill a space even when it becomes boundless. Like a modern-day Penny Lane, all blonde curls and intrigue – she’s got a signature style and she owns it. As she leads the way down sunlit streets, we’re reminded of those lyrics, etched in memory: “Turning back, she just laughs ...”
