We all love a grumpy, jaded old man! Just as long as they're on our screens, have a good sense of humour and are, well, Michael Caine. The good news is, all of this is ours to behold in the new trailer for comedy, Best Sellers.
Released August 19, we get our first taste of Caine as Harris Shaw, a legendary writer that has gone to seed. What's more, starring alongside him is Aubrey Plaza, also a grumpy old man — if only spiritually. Plaza plays Lucy Stanbridge, a young publisher trying to save her fathers publishing house from going under. To do this, she draws Harris Shaw out from his cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking, Scrooge-like retirement, to write a novel that he owes the publisher according to a long-forgotten contract. At first Shaw is testy and uncooperative, we would be too if it meant leaving our beloved Tabby behind! But as the two set off on a book tour to promote Shaw's new novel, we see the characters forge a close bond. As you can imagine, watching Plaza and Caine riff off each other brings a lot of joy and envy.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Plaza described her experience working with the celebrated actor, "He is everything that you want him to be and more. He's really one of the most delightful people I've ever worked with in my life. I was just totally like a sponge, absorbing everything that I could. He's so sweet and so fun, just constantly making jokes and telling amazing stories. His stories, obviously, are so incredible, and he's just such a generous, kind soul."
Helming the project is Lina Roessler in what will be her directorial debut. While the script is based off Anthony Grieco’s original screenplay, which won the Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting award in 2015.
Best Sellers will be available to watch in theatres on September 17. If you're tuning in to Melbourne International Film Festival, you can catch a screening of the film this Sunday, August 22. Until then, set your eyes upon the trailer below.
