It's a full-circle moment for the ugly shoe trend. What once started as a humble Birkenstock revival has laid its head to rest, here, with clogs. Sparked by a bold move on Hermés' part by reintroducing them to the runway with the brand's viral Spring Summer 21 clog, and fanned by e-girls and boys across the internet somehow reviving the Croc (of all things), the clog trend is ablaze, and the 17th-century Dutch slip-on has been taking up more mental real-estate than we had bargained for in 2021.
You know them, your mother knows them, your high school art teacher knows them, Kate Moss knows them. The universal show is having a full-blown resurgence and we are enthusiastically on-board the train of the ultimate ugly shoe. So on board, that something as unsexy as the clog suddenly feels like one of the sexiest things we could adorn our feet with. Such is the power of the trend, it would seem, and anyway, we're well trained by the likes of Margiela, McQueen, Galliano, and more recently Gvasalia by now to appreciate clothing as an extension of culture and conversation rather than just something to flatter ones waistline.
