As a long time fan of SNL, the thought of Kristen Wiig playing a middle aged woman in her own film is about as good as it gets. Which is why the news that Wiig and Annie Mumolo - creators of Bridesmaids - are yet again starring alongside each other (Mumolo made a cameo in Bridesmaids as the anxious woman on the plane) in a comedy titled, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is the kind of news we need to keep us afloat in this already disastrous year.
The film, which stars Wiig and Muolo as Barb and Star follows two lifelong best friends who happen across an unprecedented adventure upon a rash decision to leave their small Midwestern hometown for the first time for a vacation to Florida. Things go...strangely awry with the addition of an evil villain who is plotting to murder the entire town. Nevertheless, we're sure to be cackling for 99% of the film.
The trailer, which you can watch below, is a tell in itself of the way the film will be set up, as it opens with a shot of only the characters foreheads conversing about trailers, “I like how they’re little movies about another movie before a different movie. If we had our own movie trailer," they discuss "we wouldn’t want to give anything away about the movie, especially our faces." The trailer then spirals into a classic vacation themed trailer, complete with the soundtrack of Madonna's Holiday, and the addition of an evil villain, which feels more Despicable me than Floridian Vacay.
The Lionsgate film will be released digitally and will be available to rent online starting February 12. In a classic pandemic move, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar was originally slated to premiere in theatres on July 16, but was reshuffled for safety reasons.
