Unfortunately for Banksy fans down under, it's almost impossible, if not at least very rare, to get a sight of the artist's famed work IRL. With so much distance between us, we tend to rely on the tool that is social media to notify us of his latest adventures. So, earlier this month, when trustworthy internet sources began to report a string of graffiti works taking over British seaside towns; there was always an inkling that this had to be the artist's work. Now, Banksy has finally put an end to our speculation, revealing his latest body of work A Great British Spraycation.
It's no secret that Banksy regularly turns to Instagram as a platform for authenticating his work. A few days ago, (August 13), the artist was up to his old tricks again, posting a brand new video titled; A Great British Spraycation. The captivating three-minute clip takes us on an intimate journey of the making of his latest pieces. Here, Banksy shares how he travelled from location to location in a campervan; stopping in at Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Gorleston, Oulton Broad, and Cromer along the way.
As we now know, these stops became sites for Banksy's A Great British Spraycation; and throughout the video, we see shots of the street artist mingling with crowds of holiday makers before slipping off into the dead of night to make the magic happen. Anonymous as always, sporting his signature grey hoodie; Banksy's latest mural offerings are a continuation of his infamous artistic handwriting.
Even his favourite rodent gets a mention, courtesy of a sunbathing, cocktail drinking rat. Everyone deserves a holiday, after all.
While much of A Great British Spraycation remained true to tone and style, Banksy did make one creative decision that surprised fans. Uncharacteristically, Banksy also signed one of the works: a graffiti tag on a tiny thatched stable at Merrivale Model Village.
Like most of his decisions, we'll never know why or what this means until he decides to tell us. Until then, you can watch the video in full, below.
