We know that fashion loves a redux, and the Spring Summer '25 shows are no exception. The latest style to fall back into fashionable favour? Bandeaus. Our fascination with underwear-as-outwear is long, and well-documented, at that. Naked dresses, lacy negligees, and no-pants looks have dominated red carpets and runways for several seasons now, so it makes sense that bandeaus would follow suit. But if the word ‘bandeau’ alone is enough to give you war flashbacks from the jeans-and-a-nice-top era of the 2010s, don’t panic. The crops of SS25 bare only a little resemblance to sartorial eras gone past.
Typically structured, and narrow enough to allow for a little underboob, this season’s bandeau falls somewhere between an actual top and a bra. The trend first caught our eyes at Alaïa, when nearly every model floated through the Guggenheim Museum in simple, flesh-toned bandeaus.
At Prada, the look felt a little less Skims and a little more like an actual top, with structured, sometimes pocketed bandeaus appearing on the runway, paired with sharp tailoring. And at Courrèges and Sportmax, sleek, monochrome bandeaus — some with daring cutouts — reminded us that, sometimes, the smallest garments make the biggest impact.
As for how to wear the top du jour? We’re looking to runways for that, too. There was plenty of transeasonal inspiration, in the form of tiny crops worn under boxy coats and tailored jackets. And when the days (finally) start to get longer and warmer, there’s no better time to bare it all in bandeaus made to be seen. When it comes to creating an outfit around a bandeau, the general rule on this season’s runways was to balance out cheekier, low-coverage tops with bottoms of bigger proportions. Think: swishy balloon skirts à la Alaïa, and slouchy, low slung trousers like those shown by Prada and Courrèges. Or, follow Sportmax’s lead, and coordinate a denim bandeau with matching jeans. The possibilities are endless.
