It's a special kind of energy that crackles in the air right before a show.
The movement, running back and forth between racks. Hair stylists with hot tools and brushes, makeup artists with palettes. Familiar faces, Mana MacKay, Bridget Hollitt and Cameron Stephens. Laughter, smiles and lots of nervous energy.
This was the mood today at bassike's Resort '22 show. It was a special one for many reasons. After the discombobulation of last year, Fashion Week Australia 2021 certainly feels like a homecoming. A welcome back to the best and brightest stars in Australian fashion, ready to do what they do best.
But for bassike this was also a new milestone. The AAFW 2021 show, celebrating the a Resort 2022 collection titled Pause, was the designer's first ever carbon-neutral show. It's the latest step on the bassike's journey towards sustainability.
Prior to Fashion Week, we spoke with co-founder Mary Lou Ryan who spoke of the ever evolving commitment to our planet. "It's about how can we make the most responsible choice here and does it align with our sustainability initiatives," she explained. It's perhaps for this reason, but certainly for many more, that feeling at bassike backstage left a rhythmic hum in the air.
Goldwell co-hair directors Pauline Prechonnet and Karine Strachan were responsible for the soft plaiting and classic hair looks. Polished, clean, yet textured, the looks sought to amplify the collection not distract from it. MECCA Brands was the genius behind the makeup looks with graphic liner and luminescent skin. The beauty was was fresh but dynamic.
“I wanted to celebrate each model’s unique features and play with colour in a really interesting way, it’s about balance for me," says MECCA Beauty Director, Jennifer Horsley.
"The makeup is fresh with only cream products used to add a skin-like finish with subtle sheen. Brows are lightly brushed then set in place and an unexpected floating liner in varying shades gives the look strength and interest. All liner colours were inspired by the bassike collection and carefully considered to create harmony on the runway.”
