1. Light, Dark, Light Again by Angie McMahon
McMahon took home Best Independent Release this year at the ARIAs for her second studio album, released in October last year. For those not already familiar, the Australian singer-songwriter is a favourite among producers and music lovers alike – check out Angie (i've been lost) by Fred again.. if you haven't already too.
2. Chorus by Mildlife
Best Jazz Album winners for 2024 were Melbourne jazz-funk outfit Mildlife, who have been making a stir on the scene for quite some time, supporting the likes of Khruangbin and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. This new record is full of their signature uplifting grooves and soulful bridges.
3. NARA by Emily Wurramara
Best Adult Contemporary Album was awarded to Tasmanian-based artist Emily Wurramara, who channels raw emotion into her second studio album, catalysed by a house fire that revealed clarity for the singer. Her blues-rock collection reflects her battles with postpartum depression, alcohol, and a search for freedom from societal pressures.
4. Only One Mode by Speed
Sydney-based hardcore band Speed delivers raw intensity in their debut album, ONLY ONE MODE, winner of ARIAs Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Album this year. With relentless energy and unapologetic lyrics, the 10-track collection cements their place as a driving force in contemporary hardcore music. 5. Kill The Dead by 3%
The debut album by Australian hip-hop trio 3%, comprising Nooky, Dallas Woods, and Angus Field, took home Best Hip Hop / Rap Release at this year's ARIA awards. Released in August, the album addresses themes of Indigenous resilience and social justice, featuring tracks like Our People, which won Song of the Year at the 2024 National Indigenous Music Awards. 6. Pratts & Pain by Royel Otis
Taking out the most amount of nominations this year were Indie-rock duo Royel Otis, who went home with awards for producing, engineering and Best Group. Blending sun-soaked guitar riffs with melancholic lyrics, the band's debut captures a nostalgic, dream-pop soundscape, featuring standout tracks like Adored and Fried Rice.
