Tom Holland and Austin Butler will play brothers in 1980s biopic, ‘American Speed’

Tom Holland and Austin Butler

It's the duo we didn't know we needed: Tom Holland and Austin Butler are set to team up for their latest film, American Speed. The actors are lending their talents to an '80s biopic, which tells the true story of race car driver brothers Donald, Dale, and Bill Whittington. However, things go awry when two of the brothers become embroiled in a dire criminal scandal. If this sounds like a bit of you, (or you're just here for the Tom Holland and Austin Butler of it all) keep reading for everything we know about American Speed.

What is American Speed about?

According to reports, the script is currently underway, courtesy of Dan Wiedenhaupt. It's set to explore the story of the Whittington brothers and, in particular, their involvement in the 1980s International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) scandal. If you're not familiar, the scandal saw several IMSA drivers charged with financing their racing attempts with proceeds from crimes like drug smuggling, money laundering, and tax evasion. We'll avoid specific spoilers, Donald and Bill were both sentenced to 18-month and 15-year prison sentences, respectively, so, while specific plot details remain under wraps, it seems likely that American Speed will chart their involvement in the criminal happenings of the racing world in the '80s.

Who else is cast in American Speed?

So far, only Holland and Butler are attached to the project, but we'll be watching closely for another A-list name to sign on as a Whittington brother — there were three, after all.

When will American Speed be released?

With casting still underway, we're expecting to wait some time before this one hits cinemas. According to early reports, American Speed is slated for release in January, 2026. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
