Sabato De Sarno draws the curtains on his time at Gucci

A whisper, a brief statement, and just like that, the news that Sabato De Sarno was departing his role as creative director of Italian House, Gucci, was dropped. Announced Thursday morning Milan time, the House confirmed it would be parting ways with its creative director after just one year in the role. The Fall 2025 collection, to be unveiled in Milan on 25 February, will be presented by the Gucci design office — marking a quiet, in-house transition as the industry braces for the next chapter.

For a brand built on reinvention, De Sarno’s departure is another chapter in Gucci’s evolving legacy. Making his way into the House in 2023 with a vision to refine and reset, his tenure was one of restraint — a stark contrast to the maximalist theatrics of his predecessor, Alessandro Michele. Quiet luxury became his calling card, a stripped-back elegance became his signature; introducing, or rather re-introducing the House's iconic shade of Gucci Ancora red which became a signature of his tenure.

Stefano Cantino, Gucci’s CEO, acknowledged De Sarno’s impact, stating, “I sincerely appreciate how he honoured Gucci’s craftsmanship and heritage with such commitment.” Kering’s deputy CEO, Francesca Bellettini, echoed the sentiment, noting the work done to “further strengthen Gucci’s fundamentals.”

For those who need a reminder of De Sarno's fashion history, the Rome-based creative begun his career in fashion back in 2005, working at fellow Italian House, Prada, soon after moving to Dolce& Gabbana, before joining Valentino in 2009, where he held several positions before being appointed fashion director overseeing both men's and women's collections.

His departure signals another tremor in the tectonic plates of European luxury. Just days ago, Kim Jones revealed his exit from Dior Homme, and the whispers of further shifts are growing louder. What’s next for Gucci? For De Sarno? The house will announce its new artistic direction “in due time.” Until then, the industry waits, watching for the next move in fashion’s ever-unfolding game of musical chairs.
