Could ‘Severance’ season 3 be here sooner than we think?

It's been less than a week since we were transported back to the severed floor of Lumon industries for season two of Severance, and already we're pondering the future.

The psychological thriller — which comes courtesy of director/producer Ben Stiller — has had us on the edge of our seats since 2022, when season one first aired and became a bona fide smash-hit. And after a three years-long hiatus, season two is now underway, catching us up with Mark (Adam Scott) and the rest of his severed colleagues, as they try to make sense of the mysteriously sinister work they're doing at Lumon, while also grappling with their "outie" lives.

Cast your mind back to season one, and you'll likely remember that it ended on a serious cliffhanger. Naturally, we can't help but wonder if season two will do the same, or if the Lumon story will end here. Luckily, there's already been whispers that another instalment will follow suit. Allow us to explain.

Will there be a Severance season 3?

Series creator Dan Erickson discussed the long wait between season one and two, saying that he hoped to negate this in the future. "I certainly would like it to [take less time], yeah," he said.

He continued, "You’re always looking to sort of fine-tune the process and take what works and leave what doesn’t work and streamline things. So, my hope is that if there is a season three, it’s going to be sooner."

We'll admit, this statement doesn't exactly confirm that season three is 1100% underway, but if the series creator is already talking about it, we'd like to think there's a strong possibility.

When would Severance season 3 air?

Here's where things get tricky. There was a three-year hiatus between the first and second seasons, and Erickson admitted that season one was equally time-consuming to create.

"Season two actually took about the same amount of time as season one. The difference, of course, is season one nobody knew what the show was and so they weren’t waiting for it," he explained.

If a third season followed this timeline, we'd be waiting until around 2028 for it to hit our screens. Our hope is that Erickson stays true to his word, and condenses this plan just a touch. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
