How to approach a career in fashion according to advice from a career coach

Angela Briggs sits at the helm of UMENCO. As director of one of the creative industry’s most sought-after recruitment specialists, Briggs is not merely a connector of talent but a steward of the sector's future. Her role revolves around shaping the creative currents that ripple from studio to runway.

In an era where the call for ethical leadership and cultural fluency has never been louder, UMENCO stands as a lighthouse — and Briggs, its keeper. With an intuitive grasp of the industry’s shifting landscape, she crafts narratives of opportunity, where designers, strategists, and visionaries collide.

Here, Briggs shares with RUSSH her philosophy on meaningful matchmaking, her foresight on fashion’s next frontier, and the art of aligning people with purpose at UMENCO.

What is the best way to approach a career in fashion?

Career paths in fashion aren’t always linear – some roles require specific educational backgrounds, some favour a more hands-on experience; while others, perhaps a blend of both. In terms of career development, working in fashion doesn’t always equate to a designer, creative director, or CEO role to find fulfilment. The richness of the industry lies in the diversity of the roles that are available, allowing opportunity for everyone to contribute and thrive in rewarding ways. The industry has moved beyond the notion that one type of experience is inherently better than another. Today, breadth of experience is highly valued, with professionals increasingly recognised for their diverse backgrounds – whether they’ve worked in-house, brand-side, agency, freelance, or editorial, or in diverse creative industries that include fashion, beauty, technology and lifestyle. They all play a part in the ecosystem. Another positive development is the increased receptiveness to international talent, acknowledging the strength that comes from combining local and global experience. Whilst international experience isn’t essential to succeed in a role, this broadened perspective is a welcome evolution in thinking.

The ever-evolving changes of the global economy can feel daunting, where do you see opportunity or certainty?

Many of our Australian clients are currently experiencing exciting growth internationally across all channels in 2024. Brands are currently preparing for this growth and are briefing UMENCO on roles that will lead this trajectory in 2025. Asia Pacific Nations continue to have a vibrant and ever growing retail environment. Technology in China has supported innovative experiential retail concepts with digitalised retail favourably contributing to increased consumer spending in the region. India is a significant and dynamic market, with a large working population, rapid urbanisation, and some recent regulations amendments that have contributed to an increase in commerce and retail.

And on a local front?

In a playbook we speak to the First Nations Founder and creative director of Ngali, Denni Franscisco. I am excited about what First Nation brands are creating, and the knowledge and expertise First Nations people bring to our industry. Diversity and inclusion through representation creates opportunities for people of different backgrounds and circumstances to contribute their talent, knowledge and experiences to our industry. This makes it a more progressive, creative, sustainable, innovative and collaborative space, or the very best industry it can be. There continues to be focus on omni channel and category growth for many Australian brands domestically. Australia is currently experiencing a significant increase in city-to-regional migration, with 35.6 per cent more people moving from capital cities to regional areas. This creates opportunities for omni channel growth and for bricks and mortar representation in regional areas.

Sustainability is more important than ever, especially in fashion. How should it impact the choices we make?

Many brands now have departments dedicated to sustainability and minimising environmental impact, alongside corporate social responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion. There is continued opportunity and growth in the availability of career-defining roles, and the day-to-day and long-term improvements we can all make by being informed and considered in our choices.

What advice would you share with someone who is just starting out or looking for growth in their career?

On a basic level, whenever I need to reset and refocus, I write a list. I always keep a notebook with me – I love setting priorities for the day, week, month, and year. Taking notes and writing everything down keeps me grounded. Instead of relying on memory, I ask for clarity when needed and stay engaged, always grateful to have notes to refer back to. Make the most of each chapter in your career. Make choices that align with your values. Grow from the setbacks, and celebrate your successes with humility and joy. Where possible, listen, learn and always look to lift each other up. ‘ Don’t be afraid to have big dreams, to be passionate, and to work toward your goals. Equally, if your priorities lie beyond career ambition, there are still roles and pathways that can be a perfect fit for you. Staying up-to-date on industry trends and innovations, and respecting diverse perspectives is key. And finally, good manners will never go out of style.

What is a playbook and where can we find it?

A playbook is a curated collection of interviews, articles and profiles that delve into the career journeys of local and international fashion talent - from design assistants to CEOs. Within a playbook we have had the incredible opportunity to connect and create with talented, successful and inspiring individuals. From case studies of successes and setbacks to career advice and position descriptions, the rich tapestry of stories serves as a holistic guide to building a diverse and successful career from the people who shape the industry. In line with UMENCO’s commitment to giving back, all proceeds will be donated to Giant Steps, a school dedicated to providing a rich and meaningful education to children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. You can purchase it on the UMENCO website and in-store at Above The Clouds, Surry Hills.
