PSA: Paul Mescal is returning to the stage with ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’

Paul Mescal

If you want to experience Paul Mescal’s charm IRL, you might just be in luck. Fresh off the success of Gladiator 2, the Irish actor is returning to the stage, for another turn in A Streetcar Named Desire.

If this news sounds familiar, that’s likely because it is. Mescal has already brought the iconic play to life as Stanley on the West End in early 2023 (and earned critical acclaim and a ‘Best Actor’ Olivier award in the process). Now, the production will return to London and make its first trip to the United States. All the important details below.

How to see Paul Mescal in A Streetcar Named Desire

Unfortunately for Aussie Paul Mescal-devotees, you’ll need to time your next overseas trip in line with the play’s running dates. According to Variety, Mescal and his castmates will take to London’s Noël Coward Theatre from February 3 - 22, 2025, before heading to Brooklyn, New York during the Spring. It’s also likely that tickets will be hard to come by, with the cast’s first run of the play quickly selling out.

What is A Streetcar Named Desire about?

Written by Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire charts the turmoil of Blanche DuBois, a former Southern belle who is forced to leave her once-charmed life and move to New Orleans with her sister, Stella, and brother-in-law Stanley. The iconic trio have been brought to life by a host of actors since the play's first run on Broadway in 1947, including Marlon Brando as Stanley in the original cast, and Cate Blanchett as Blanche in a Sydney Theatre Company production in 2009.

Who is cast in A Streetcar Named Desire?

While exactly who will be joining Mescal on stage in the 2025 production remains unconfirmed, the 2023 cast included Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran as Blanche, Anjana Vasan as Stella, and Dwane Walcott as Harold ‘Mitch’ Mitchell.
