Our music editor shares her favourites songs from October 2024

October, you were wild. However, your saving grace is that Halloween has allowed me to include more gothic undertones than usual under the guise of being seasonally inclusive rather than just, goth. Whilst the playlist has new music from Sharon Van Etten, Mk.gee, Baxter Dury, Miss Darcy and Dehd, I’ve thrown in some stone cold goth/darkwave hits. I will take any excuse to playlist Lucretia My Reflection or This Mortal Coil’s version of Kangaroo.

Afterlife, Sharon Van Etten and The Attachment Theory

Sharon clearly got the October goth memo. Her vocals and artful melody creation is as strong as ever with the harmonies coming in to shift gear just when you’d like them too. More please.

God of Everything, Porridge Radio

I love heavy albums: in a sea of party girls, we should make room for the introspective yearning of a heavy heart. Lead singer Dana Margolin’s ruthlessly self-interrogating writing style is mirrored by crescendoing tragedy in the band’s music. The new album Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me is important and should be listened to ASAP.

The Ants, Coldwave

Scrappy and frantic with suitable tension between precision and screams, The Ants is the latest from Adelaide based 6 piece. Finally, trumpets and guitars united in a way that is not hideous ska-punk, who knew

The Seed, Anna Lunoe

The seasons are changing, which means we are in dire need of track that brings us back to life. Enter, Anna Lunoe's debut album, Pearl, and more specifically, her track The Seed.

“This track came from my first demo day in Feb 2023. I knew instantly there was some innocent rave magic in that vocal line reminiscent of the early 2k trance i grew up loving. It took a few tries to achieve but I love its final form," she shared. A rave track that will carry you into the warmer days.

Drunk, Fabiana Palladino

I think this song is deeply lyrically relatable to most of us, I am always ‘reading too much into nothing.’

One Metaphor, Arbes

From forthcoming record, Counterways, Arbes are making music that straddles art rock, post punk and psychedelia. It’s engaging and atmospheric.

Doomsday Childsplay, Elias Ronnenfelt

From the latest record, HEAVY GLORY.

A Thousand Years, Fazerdaze

Fazerdaze refers to her sound and forthcoming record as a “bedroom stadium record”, which is an ethos I can get behind. She playfully melds synths and more electronic production with elements of classic rock, straddling the fine line between grit and and pop that is grounded in authenticity.

Trouble, Max Baby

Some shimmering guitar from Max Baby, we speculate he could be getting in the trouble he asks for at Bar Jeanette.

Learn from the Dinosaur, Harvey Pink’s Flying Bathhouse

I love it when music traverses playful and powerful, the repetitive chords develop through this song adding layers of meaning as you go and additional textures come and go.

Forever Held, Jon Hopkins

Celestial and sentimental, just what the doctor ordered from Hopkins.

Broken, Ela Minus

There is something Björk-esque about this, it’s intriguing with a bid dancefloor moment.
