Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer are starring together in a ‘Blade Runner’ series

The Blade Runner pantheon is expanding. Ridley Scott's futurism-soaked world is returning in series form, and two of the sharpest, blinkering stars will be joining aboard the ride. Scott first announced Blade Runner 2099 was in the works in November 2021, with Amazon revealing it was in development at the platform in February 2022. Now, we've got confirmation that Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer have been tapped for the series. News has been swirling of what to expect, so we've compiled a what-to-know about the future of Blade Runner 2099. Below, here's what's looming ahead.

What is Blade Runner 2099 about?

Like the other installations in the franchise, expect moody contemplations of self, sex, technology and governments going haywire. The show is a sequel to both the original Blade Runner film and the followup film, Blade Runner 2049. While the storyline has yet to be announced, Yeoh will be starring as a character called Olwen. The role is reportedly a replicant nearing her last days. We'll have to wait for Schafer's character description, but we hope that it'll be based on that Met Gala look. If the series is anything like its previous contenders, we're expect a synth-moody soundtrack to accompany Scott's dream world.

Who will be working on the film?

Silka Luisa will be working as showrunner and executive producer on the project. Scott will executive produce along with David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger of Scott Free Productions. Alcon Entertainment (which secured the rights to produce “Blade Runner” prequels and sequels, beginning with Ryan Gosling's Blade Runner 2049) co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are also executive producers, as is Alcon’s president of television Ben Roberts. Jonathan van Tulleken will direct the first two episodes and executive produce. The film will be produced under Prague production company Film United.

When will the series be released?

Everyone has been keeping mum as to when or where the series will live and be released. Have no fear, once we catch wind, we'll be the first to let you know. Until then, catch Schafer's last performance in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
