There's a reason John Waters has stuck around. His ouerve is certainly impressive: Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Cecil B. Demented are sweeping tableaus of the absurd and the queer. Beyond that, Waters has managed to capture the essence of the American Dream with a demented, acute awareness. Waters never shies from the quirks or asymmetries of the human condition. Instead, he shines a light on what makes them a force of good, razing any conceptions of our proclivities or orientations as anything but uniquely us. We have him to thank for breathing life into Ursula, wielding influence on Rupaul of Rupaul's Drag Race, and for being a voice for the wonderfully odd.
It's been 20 years since John Waters was at the helming end of a film. After the satirical, sex -fuelled dramedy A Dirty Shame, the Pope of Trash himself will be returning to the big screen. And he won't be alone. Aubrey Plaza is slated to join him as the titular lead of his newest development, 'Liarmouth'. Beneath, we deliver everything we know thus far about the ongoings of the project.
What is Liarmouth about?
Liarmouth chronicles the life of Marsha Sprijnkle, who is a self-made “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise,” as the book details. She has cast her former lover and fellow scammer Daryl aside, and has no qualms about pocketing stolen money from her own family. The description follows: “Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth – until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
The adaptation should follow the same trajectory under Water's guidance.
Who is involved in the making of the film adaptation?
Village Roadshow has optioned the book, with Waters taking leadership over the story. Aubrey Plaza is the director's first choice to star as Sprinkle herself, and reportedly enjoys the script.
Is there a release date for Liarmouth?
There is unfortunately not a release date. Waters has previously bemoaned the financial status of the film with its lack of secured funding. Liarmouth is in search of cold, hard cash - and until then, we'll keep you posted of when the piggy bank fills.
