We've known for a while that The White Lotus would be heading to Thailand for its third season, however there was a question mark around which of the country's four Four Seasons hotels Mike White would settle on. As of February 1, 2024, we can confirm the destination is the luxury Four Seasons resort in Koh Samui.
The resort is nestled on a secluded peninsula on the island's northeast coast, and features thatched-roof villas with private infinity pools overlooking the tropical seascape. It's the ultimate lush island getaway and like the filming locations in prior seasons – the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and San Domenico Palace in Taormina, Sicily – we expect its rooms will be perpetually sold out from here on out. I guess we'll have to settle with experiencing it vicariously through the screen (not because we can't afford it, we swear).
Which makes sense when you think about it. The showrunner revealed shortly after season two wrapped that the next edition of The White Lotus would focus on spirituality and all the themes it invokes. There is something delicious about white Western citizens searching for God in a developing nation from the safety of their plush, five star hotel. Throw Mike White's biting social commentary into the mix, and you know we're strapping in for a exhilarating dose of secondhand embarrassment.
"The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” White said, "I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.” Will we see a meditation on wellness culture and capitalism, cultural appropriation? Will there be sticks of palo santo, tantric sex, yoga and conversions to Buddhism? Quick – somebody dial Gwyneth Paltrow, she was built for this season.
