Copenhagen, Denmark is fast becoming the world's newest fashion mecca. The Danes are known for a lot of things – Vikings, licorice, Legos and fairytales – but their impeccable eye for design and taste for all things beautiful are what has caught the fashion industry's attention in recent years – Scandi style well, just about everything, trending across homes and wardrobes.
Copenhagen Fashion Week Fall Winter 2024 kicked off this week – running from 29 January until 2 February – with shows from Scandinavian brands like Marimekko, Skall Studio, Wood Wood and more headlining the packed schedule. We here at RUSSH decided it was only fair to turn our eye to the streets to see how the city's fashionable attendees would be swathed en route to the shows.
As it turns out, Copenhagen's street style is more muted in palette – but doesn't compromise on boring silhouettes. Structured, double-breasted coats and trenches, embellished with brooches and worn oversized – are the outerwear of choice (apt, given the temperature won't be going over 7 degrees there this week). Menswear felt playful but refined, simple, time-worn patterns like snakeskin and pinstripes still punctuating otherwise classic silhouettes. Perhaps to kick the winter blues, the Danes have been especially playful in their accessorising this week – opting for men's ties, funky headwear, and pops of cherry red – red leather gloves, shining red purses, red stockings, red ballet flats, and the occasional red lip.
When it came to bags – Bottega Veneta has proved ever-popular once again. Italian brand Marni also made its way onto the arms of plenty of attendees – there was even some Phoebe Philo-era Celine to be spotted. Tabi boots were intermixed with plenty of Scandi-western style cowboy boots, and plenty of stand-out sneakers. The other colour of the moment – perhaps influenced by the Barbie-isms of 2023 – is of course, pink. But the Scandinavians aren't stuck on just Barbie pinks – there are millenial pinks, pastel pinks, peachy pinks and even that very specific fuschia pink now synonymous with Valentino's Fall Winter 22/23 collection.
