Sophie Turner set to star in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s ‘Tomb Raider’ series

Sophie Turner and Phoebe Waller Bridge

It's official! Phoebe Waller-Bridge's long-awaited Tomb Raider television adaptation has finally found its star, in none other than Sophie Turner.

The British actor and Game of Thrones alum is reportedly in negotiations for the iconic role of Lara Croft, which has previously been brought to life by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

Of course, rumblings of a Tomb Raider remake have been circling for nearly two years, with the only thing certain that Waller-Bridge—who is adored by all for her black comedy hits Fleabag, Crashing and Killing Eve—would be on board to write and executive produce. The project comes as part of the star's renewed her deal with retail giant and streamer, Amazon. Sources say that this new deal will last three years, similar to her initial pact with Amazon in 2019. This agreement also sees her teaming up with author Claudia Lux to adapt her book Sign Here into an Amazon series.

Even more exciting, the project is set to be mammoth, with one source revealing to The Hollywood Reporter that it is amongst the largest commitments at Amazon since Lord of the Rings. To put that in dollars and cents, it is estimated that Amazon has spent $250 million on rights.

Below, all the important details.

Who is involved in the Tomb Raider project?

While Turner is in talks to play Lara Croft, the internet is abuzz with rumours of other actresses who were considered for the role. Among them, Emma Mackey, Mackenzie Davis, ad Lucy Boynton all reportedly underwent screen tests.

As for any other actors attached to the project, that remains to be seen. Hopefully it won't be too long before the remainder of the cast is locked in.

When will the Tomb Raider series come out?

With Amazon just now securing their lead actor, we're a while away from firming up a release date. Our guess is that filming will commence some time in 2025, and we'll (hopefully) be watching it all go down in 2026.
