Our must-sees at Sydney Contemporary 2022

sydney contemporary 2022

Want to know where to find the most exciting names in Australian and New Zealand art? Step into Sydney Contemporary, the premier art fair bringing more than 450 artists and their works together in one space. Taking place across September 8-11, it sets the tone for the artists, curators and galleries that continue to inspire us for the year to come. But before you make your way to Carriageworks, first let us share the must-see works we'll be keeping an eye out for in 2022. Find them below.

Solomon Kammer @ Yavuz Gallery, Sydney

A disabled artist working on Kaurna land, Solomon Kammer spares no one with their fleshy, visceral paintings that position the body as a battleground fought over in politics and worthy social justice pursuits. Showing at the Yavuz Gallery booth this year, as part of its Flock Together exhibition, we're looking forward to see their portrait of Jamila Main in person.

Julia Trybala @ STATION Gallery, Sydney

Julia Trybala's swirling amber-toned paintings have long held our eye. Cramped by the confines of the canvas, the female form appears in contorted positions with subtle gestures. Exhibiting new works for Sydney Contemporary and joining Consuelo Cavaniglia for an in-conversation on Friday Night Art Night, Trybala draws from past conversations and personal experiences to comment of the politics of the feminine body.

Jason Phu @ Chalk Horse Gallery, Sydney

Created in the studio of Laura Jones, Jason Phu will show his tongue-in-cheek paintings that explore the absurdity of modern life and social interactions. We've never met an artwork from Phu that didn't catch us off guard, with its cutting humour and child-like figures, mirroring our own emotions back at us.

Left: Jason Phu, im riding a horse to nowhere town (and nobody’s gonna stop me because everyone turned into sand), 2022. Right: Jason Phu, birds and butterflies and bee and flowers and unhappy frogs and lillies in a swamp at sunset, 2022.

John Olsen @ Olsen Gallery, Sydney

An Australian great has sought out the help of Mexican ceramicist Lino Alvarez of La Paloma Pottery in Hill End for a collection of terracotta glazed dishes. We could stare at them all day.
