All eyez on Tupac, and now his mother Afeni too. A new docuseries currently in the pipeline at FX will focus on the celebrated relationship between mother and son. It's called Dear Mama and the trailer has just dropped.

Titled after one of his most beloved tracks, one dedicated to his mother and released a year before his own death, according to FX the limited series will be “told through the eyes of the people who knew them best". With their input, the production studio will attempt to piece together the unique and intimate bond shared between Afeni and Tupac, the former of whom was a Black rights activist and member of the Black Panther Party.

Like most mothers, it was Afeni's love and influence that nurtured the socially conscious poet Tupac would become. His verses spoke to a disenfranchised many; steeped in critical insights on race, class; with a tenderness and respect for women — his mother, his sister and lovers — shining through above all. Most notably in the famed track Keep Ya Head Up.

"I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women."

In the trailer, a voice can be heard saying, "It was my responsibility to teach Tupac how to survive his reality". “So when Tupac do something wrong, take your little sorry self in that corner, get The New York Times and let’s have a debate about it. Not a discussion, a debate. Let me hear what your idea is. Stand up. Defend it", it continued.

Interlaced through are archival images of Tupac as a boy, alongside his famous letters and poems in that recognisable scrawl. Not unlike the ones he left for his high school best friend Jada Smith.

Dear Mama is slated for release sometime later this year in spring, where it will immediately be available to stream on Hulu. In the meantime, you can watch the newly released trailer to Dear Mama, below.
