In partnership with Yu Mei
Blue seas and yellow sun. A reminder that life is a balancing act between calm and chaos, and a clarion call to surrender to it. It's from this point that Yu Mei sucks us into its' digital Spring Summer presentation, 'Under the Same Sun'.
Forced online out of necessity, Yu Mei founder Jessie Wong has embraced the cancelled runways with an insistent optimism for her Spring Summer 2022 presentation. Wong has turned instead to the approaching summer ahead, rather than dwell on the lockdown addled winter we leave behind, and it shows. Yu Mei's latest collection of luxury leather goods is imbued with optimism and ease - a lightness that can only be found in the natural world - but there is also an undeniably hard exterior.
It's a beachside affair and the models mean business. Dressed in suits, cropped button downs and aviators, the models storm across the beach armed with nappa leather bucket bags, totes slung across their shoulders and scrunchie-handled pochettes held like briefcases.
Immediately our eyes graze pops of colour in shades of solar-powered yellow and ultramarine blue. It takes a little bit longer to spot the grounding umber croc skin or it's lighter, ice cap-coloured playmate. Music thuds away somewhere in the distance, as though we're submerged in water and just able to hear the sonic run-off.
There's a sense that these models, hardened and serious, are protectors of the natural realm. Which, as it were, is an apt metaphor for our current context and Yu Mei, itself. The label takes from the natural world, only to treat the materials carefully and with consideration. Fashioned from buttery lamb leather prepared by local experts in Timaru, as well as New Zealand deer nappa and suede, 'Under the Same Sun' is an ode to craftsmanship, to balance, to the earth and each other.
It's never been more clear, that there's no place we'd rather be than 'Under The Same Sun' as Yu Mei.
