If there's one thing we know with certainty about any Christopher Nolan film, it's that it's going to be big. The British-American film director has mastered this incredible ability to transport the audience into every universe he creates; and if you're a fan of Nolan, you'll know that the experience is always otherworldly. Now, the director has announced his first film since 2020's Tenant, titled Oppenheimer; and as usual, the cast is set to be an all-star ensemble.
Oppenheimer will be a biopic of sorts, following the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicists remembered as one of the fathers of the atom bomb. Earlier in the year, Nolan confirmed his plans to begin working on the film; but at the time, had only announced that the one and only Cillian Murphy would take on the leading role. Finally, after much anticipation, Nolan has treated us to some more news, sharing that Emily Blunt will also form part of the cast.
History has proven that Nolan does not tread lightly when it comes to the casting of his films, so we can't imagine that the next instalment in the Christopher Nolan universe will be any less. Here's everything we know so far about Oppenheimer.
What is Oppenheimer about?
The film will be based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The book actually won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005, so we're guessing, like all Nolan films, that the storyline will be fairly intricate. Universal, who is releasing the project, described it as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”
Who has been confirmed to star in the film so far?
As we already mentioned, Murphy was previously the only actor confirmed on the project, but this morning we woke to the news that Emily Blunt had also joined the cast. Though it has not been confirmed; rumour has it that Blunt will be starring opposite Murphy as the wife of Oppenheimer.
This is the first time Blunt has worked with Nolan on a film, but we doubt it will be the last with her recent track record of blockbuster hits.
When will Christopher Nolan release Oppenheimer?
At this stage, it's looking like Oppenheimer will finally hit our screens on July 21, 2o23 – a slot typically saved for Nolan films in the past. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer, to come.
