Ever since Bong Joon Ho's Parasite was released, we have been impatiently waiting for more of the story, or really, more of anything from the Korean director. Joon Ho - the people's prince - finally gave us the information we've so desperately wanted at the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival last week, an update on his Parasite-esque spin off series.
According to the director, he will be working alongside Succession producer Adam McKay on the HBO series, which has been in development since January 2020, spending much of last year’s time inside adapting the Oscar-winning Parasite. Disappointingly for us, the series isn't going to be a sequel to the film, rather another separate story loaded with social satire and commentary around wealth, privilege, and poverty, set in the same universe as Parasite. Still good tho!
“Parasite is a film on wealthy and poor families, and that is a problem everywhere,” Joon Ho said at Cannes this year, adding that the series “will be something of great genius, I hope. I worked with Adam McKay and he’s figuring out the scenario. We’re going to do it in the United States.” We know it will, king!

“The subject continues to have resonance in France and elsewhere,” he added. “Many of us would like to be rich, but I think in all of us there is a fear of becoming poor.” he said, going on to say that the series will, in classic Parasite fashion be a black comedy, of which he will work alongside McKay as producer for the series with HBO.
“I had no idea that Parasite would be such a global hit. Its success was far beyond my expectations. Though I made it in exactly the same way as normal,” Joon Ho also said. “And I remain unchanged by it. I mean, look at me, I’m exactly the same.” We hope you never do change, earth angel of film.
