Every once in a while, there's a moment or event in the history of true crime that strikes an unusual chord. Stories, for example, like that of Elisa Lam – where despite years of investigation, something doesn't seem quite right. Streaming platform, Netflix, has recently become a master in bringing these harrowing and often unprecedented stories to light and now, it's back to tell another; with a new docuseries titled, Sophie: A Murder in West Cork.
The documentary will follow the harrowing tale of French documentary producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was found dead outside her holiday cottage in West Cork in 1996. Taking form as a three-part series, Sophie: A Murder in West Cork will feature interviews from those involved in the investigation, locals from the small Irish town where Sophie was killed and moments and contributions from her son, who is still seeking justice 25 years later.
"Sophie’s brutal murder in one of the most beautiful and remote regions of Ireland shocked the country and triggered one of the biggest investigations it had ever seen—and over the next two and a half decades became a national obsession in both Ireland and France," it's official description reads.

"With access both to the victim's family and the man who quickly became the main suspect in the police investigation, the series unravels this extraordinary story from its beginnings and offers a unique window into the ongoing battle to find justice for Sophie."
If you're wondering whether Sophie Toscan du Plantier's murderer was ever found, we can offer up one spoiler before you dive into this insane true-crime story. In 2019, a British journalist by the name of Ian Bailey, who lived in a cottage close to where Sophie was found murdered, was found guilty by the Paris Cour d’Assises in France. However, in 2020 it was ruled that, Bailey, who still lives in Cork County, could not be extradited to France.
As for how the case found its way to Bailey, you'll have to watch Sophie: A Murder in West Cork to find out when it lands on Netflix come June 30.
