David Bowie’s ‘Just a Gigolo’ is finally getting a digital release

Bowie come back. Back in 1978, director David Hemmings created Just a Gigolo, David Bowie’s filmic follow up to The Man Who Fell to Earth, where he starred alongside Kim Novak and Marlene Dietrich in the long-forgotten period film.

Now, the film is finally set to get its first digital UK release, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome more Bowie-fuelled moments into our lives. Set in post-World War I Berlin, Just a Gigolo sees Bowie cast for the role of Paul von Przygodski, a young Prussian man who “arrives in the trenches in time to be caught in the final explosion of the Great War”. Quite the seachange from the stage!

“After recuperating in a military hospital, where he is mistaken for a French hero, he returns to Berlin,” reads a synopsis. “His family home has been turned into a boarding house, his father is paralyzed, and his mother is working in the Turkish baths.”

“Attempting to find a new purpose, his childhood friend, Cilly, abandons him for fame and fortune; his former commanding officer, Captain Kraft (played by Hemmings), tries to persuade him to join his right-wing movement and a widow, Helga von Kaiserling (Kim Novak), briefly seduces him with the finer things in life.”

Unfortunately, Bowie hasn't historically been as thrilled about the film - which will release in the UK on August 16 - as we are in this moment, with the late musical legend stating previously that the film, essentially, made him cringe like mad. “Everybody who was involved in that film – when they meet each other now, they look away,” he told NME in a 1980 interview.  “It was my 32 Elvis Presley movies rolled into one.”

I suppose we will have to judge for ourselves! Sorry Bowie. Find more about Just a Gigolo's release at the Fabulous Films website, which is distributing the film, and watch the trailer, below.
