As far as the original hot rock 'n' roll girl goes, Fiona Apple is up there among Patti and Nico in our books. Equally prolific in her own right, the 11-time Grammy nominee and winner of the 2021 Grammy for Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Album, is an angel among legends. One who apparently slept through her Grammy win in 2021 according to Apple's friend Zelda Hallman, who was with the musician during the ceremony and tweeted: “Woke her up to ask if she wanted to know and she closed her eyes". Mood.
As expected, Apple did not attend the ceremony this year, sharing on Hallman's Instagram her decision behind her absence. “It’s not because I’m trying to protest, even though I have problems with the Grammys," she said. "It’s not because of that I’m not going. It’s just really because I don’t want to be on national television. I’m just not made for that kind of stuff anymore. I want to stay sober and I can’t do that sober. It doesn’t feel safe to me, to be in that kind of exposure, scrutiny, comparison to people.” Fair enough, Fiona!
While she continues to live the life of a legend, we can't help but feel the need to reflect on all the times she was on national television, now that we know that may no longer be a thing. With style that was irrefutably rock 'n' roll and during a moment in music history when misogyny was particularly rife, if clothing was Apple's armour, cropped singlets were her chest plate, and she wore them with as much reckless abandon as she had on stage.
