In partnership with La Mer
The changing seasons isn’t something that just affects what we wear. It’s something that should affect the way we dress our skin too. Just as we each have a wardrobe of silky sheaths for summer and weighted coats for winter, having an adaptable wardrobe of skincare is a way to prepare our complexions for seasonal changes.
Beauty icon Jess Gomes is someone well versed in seasonal skincare. Among many things, she's regarded for her glass-like complexion and uncluttered approach to self-care. So naturally, we're always intrigued to understand her routine and how she makes skincare work for her. A wanderer, sun-seeker and traveller, Gomes knows how changing environments impact the skin and how to ensure her complexion stays healthy and balanced.
Below, she delves into her perfected seasonal skincare rituals with La Mer and why catering to the weather with her moisturising wardrobe is the secret to success.
What’s currently in your beauty routine?
I use a cleanser and an exfoliant followed by La Mer’s The Moisturizing Soft Cream on a daily basis. At night I like to use La Mer’s Crème de La Mer.
How does your skincare change from season to season?
In summer, I use a lot of light-weight products while in winter I use a lot of richer and more moisturising products. I have dry skin, so I have to make sure it gets what it needs – especially in the cooler months. Since La Mer’s moisturisers are rich in hydration but don't have that heavy and oily feeling, you really get that balance without overloading your skin.
How do you help your skin adapt?
I think it’s important to make sure my skin is always hydrated and renewed. I have a bit of a wardrobe of moisturisers that I change out to suit my skin needs at the time. I always turn to Crème de La Mer when my skin is really dry. I prefer to use The Moisturizing Soft Cream when I want that soft radiance, with a lighter weight texture. I know that I’ll still get that deep hydration that’s so essential to my routine. I also get regular facials and treatments to help my skin adapt to the change of seasons; it's something I've always done.
How do you care for your skin in the cooler weather?
Of course, winter calls for a different moisturiser than summer, especially at night. What makes Crème de la Mer perfect for nights is the crème’s signature ingredient, the Miracle Broth™ technology. It’s deeply nourishing and I wake up glowing.
What products are in your moisturising “wardrobe”?
I use both the Crème de la Mer and The Moisturizing Soft Cream depending on how my skin feels, or what I have planned that day. The Moisturizing Soft Cream actually keeps moisture in while acting as a barrier for external irritants, so it gives me that protective layer as well as enhancing skin’s natural radiance. And of course, SPF is essential.
What’s your fix or cure-all when your skin is tired or irritated?
I think one of the best things for irritated skin is to just leave it alone. Placing a cool towel over your face to calm any irritation works well. I do also like a mist.
If my skin is irritated, I always make sure to take extra care in the way I apply my skincare. The secret to activating the Miracle Broth™ lies in a soothing ritual. Warm Crème de la Mer for a few seconds between fingertips until it becomes translucent, then press gently into the skin. This ensures the nutrients are fully absorbed and leaves me feeling renewed and radiant.
Do you have any wellness rituals?
Yes, I exercise. I box and I’ve been doing these Pilates classes online. Then I stretch and I get outside, and walk or hike when I can.
I also love facials and I get massages too.
What's the best beauty advice you've heard?
Always keep it simple - and hydration is key.
