It has been made official that the 2021 Grammys will not be taking place on January 31 as planned, and will be postponed to a non-specific date in March. The event was postponed in light of a new COVID-19 surge in California, where the event is usually held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

According to Variety, who broke the news through the night, a combination of health and travel concerns led the Recording Academy and CBS to make the call to postpone the ceremony and show. It is still scheduled to be hosted by “The Daily Show”‘s Trevor Noah, and was always slated to be recorded without a live audience due to COVID-19 risks.

We can expect to hear more on the updated date soon, alongside location details and the like. As for the nominations, Beyoncé is in the lead with nine nominations, followed by Dua Lipa who has six, Roddy Ricch, and Taylor Swift, who also have six each.

The delay was announced the day after final-round voting ended for the awards. This will mean that even though we will all have to wait longer to find out who will win this year, the votes are already in, and now it's just a waiting game.

The news for "music's biggest night" came as no surprise given the current circumstances with the pandemic in the US, with California battling some of the highest case numbers so far, reaching 74,000 new cases in a single day yesterday, with 2,453,520 current confirmed cases state-wide - an almost unbelievable number compared to case numbers here in Australia.

So far, this is the first of the major awards events which have postponed the show this year, however, we can predict that we're going to see further updates throughout the month as we continue to see changes with the COVID-29 situation in the US and UK.
