There's no question that Legally Blonde's Elle Woods has become a cultural icon since the first film premiered almost two decades ago. Not a day goes by where we don't reference the character's quick wit, crave her contagiously positive attitude and take inspiration from her undeniably stylish (and pink-hued) outfits. Although the last few years have had their pitfalls, one thing it has given us is hope – with the news that Legally Blonde 3 will be arriving to our screens sometime in 2023 according to the official MGM Studios website.
"I can't tell you what it means to me to see your faces. This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn't finish college but I finished 'Legally Blonde,'" Witherspoon shared during the recording.
To prepare us for the masterpiece that is sure to be Legally Blonde 3, we're giving you a debrief on everything we know about the film so far. All the important information lies below.
When will production for Legally Blonde 3 begin?
It was previously announced that actress Mindy Kaling would be jumping on board for the threequel as one of the film's scriptwriters, alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor. The pair won't be altering the film's original script – written by Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah in mid-2018 – but rather, will be bringing an "entirely fresh spin."

What is the plot of Legally Blonde 3?
When we left our girl Elle at the end of the film's sequel, the Harvard-student-turned-successful lawyer expressed her dreams of moving to Washington DC, setting her sights firmly on The White House, no less. Although we know very little about the film's plot at present, Witherspoon kick-started our imagination during an interview in December 2019, where she dropped a few hints.
When prompted by The Hollywood Reporter, with the sentence "Legally Blonde 3 will be..." the actress responded with, “So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3.”
Who will return for the threequel?
Fans of Legally Blonde will be happy to hear that everyone's favourite beauty icon – and Elle's confidante – Paulette Bonafonté will be making a return for the third film. Reese Witherspoon really loves that Jennifer Coolidge is returning too. “There is no Legally Blonde 3 without Jennifer Coolidge,” Witherspoon said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight which is the news we so desperately wanted to hear. Coolidge gave a heartwarming response to Witherspoon's comments, “Of course, I would be on board. I’ve been hearing about it for a long time,” Coolidge told Extra. “Maybe it really is happening at this point. I would absolutely love to do Legally Blonde 3.”

As for other members of the film's memorable cast, Witherspoon told ET during an interview in December 2019, that “If we end up doing it, hopefully they end up all being there."
The first discussions of Legally Blonde 3 happened in 2018, but due to COVID-19, that changed. All we can do is hope and prey that the iconic film will come back this year.
