As we've come to learn, if you want fashion with heightened stakes and a hefty serving of the unexpected, bypass the Oscars entirely and head straight to the annual after party instead. Only once the awards are over can the actors, directors and Hollywood bigwigs trade in their stiff suits and scratchy gowns for something more risqué.
At the 2023 Oscars after party, hosted every year by Vanity Fair, vintage fashion dominated. This is not a new phenomenon, stylists have been looking to the archives over the runway for red carpet inspiration for some time now. Frankly, it's a win-win situation. Sustainability? Check. Nostalgia? You bet. A quiet flex of taste and knowledge? In droves, baby. Kelsey Asbille wore 2001 Maison Margiela, Camille Rowe stepped out in Karl Lagerfeld’s Chloé and Georgia May Jagger had us gagged in L'Wren Scott.
That's not to say there weren't other moments we loved. On the other end of the spectrum, some names showed up in clothes that were presented less than two weeks ago during fashion month. Taking cues from Lady Gaga in new season Versace, Hunter Schafer turned up to the 2023 Oscars after party in the closing look from Ludovic De Saint Sernin's recent Ann Demeulemeester debut. Julia Garner arrived in the final look from Off-White, Sarah Paulson in Harris Reed's Nina Ricci and Greta Lee in Loewe Fall Winter 2023.
