Ah hair trends, as the beauty coordinator here at RUSSH, this is like my version of Christmas. Having the joy of seeing what will come in and out each year, the colours, cuts and styles and what will grace our feeds. It's pure inspirational magic! It's only March and we've already seen a slew of new trends hit our agenda. As usual, it's a delightful merry-go-round of nostalgia and alternative fashion trends inspired from the Pinterest boards of years past.
What hair trends can we expect for 2022?
This coming year, stylists are already predicting a mixed revival of alternative hairstyles from years past. But considering 70's is at its height right now this shouldn't come as a surprise. It only makes sense that same idealisation of the past would coax 2022's biggest hairstyle trends. But it's not just the 70's making a comeback, famous cuts and colours from the 90's and beyond Y2K era all making their impact, each putting their new unique 2022 stamp on the look. Think glossy flat ironed strands, millennial accessories and chopped in layers. All just as fun and flirty as before with that little extra something!
Thankfully, what we learn from years past can only help propel us forward, with each style aptly refreshed for the future (We don't need to see hair glitter make a return, thank you very much!). Wearing these looks has become a whole lot simpler thanks to just a few simple styling hacks. With all that said and done, here are some ideas to get you going.
Chocolate Brown

Ever since Hailey Bieber debuted her glossy brunette mane last year our eyes were on the prize. How can we emulate it immediately if not sooner? RUSSH spoke to Koda's Diane Gorgievski who claimed this will be a big hair trend for 2022, saying this year is all about embracing our natural tone and texture, it's never been a better time for hair to feel healthy and glossy.
90's Blowouts

While there have been many 90's trends taking precedence this year, perhaps none more overt than the blow out, made famous by the supermodels of the time, including our favourite Cindy Crawford, the style has taken on a mind of it's own with the likes of beauty TikTok taking over and showing us all how to achieve the look with the au naturale hot rollers. Simple and sophisticated, it's the updated version of the original, sleeker and with more bounce.
Mid Length Bob

Another 90's mainstay, is there anything better than an effortless bob? While there have been many versions, including chopped in shorter layers and razored ends, it's the middle parted longer bob that will take charge this year. Start longer, and tell your hair dresser to go for a blunter, full style, keeping layers to a minimum.
Y2K Hair Accessories

We thought after 2005 we'd likely seen the back of most of these trends, oh how wrong we were! While the looks aren't as Kitsch as they once were, celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo have made a case for bubbly Lizzie Maguire-esque beauty. The latest iteration of this style includes colourful hair clips, pastel crochet hats and pastel scrunchies. Cuteness overload!
Heavy Bangs

Thanks to TikTok we've seen a welcome return to the tumblr Twee style, following the likes of our girl crush Zooey Deschanel and other alternative influencers. This new version looks to a thicker style, starting further back from the crown. Speak to your stylist about chopping in heavier to the sides and gradually softening the strands in the centre. This style works best by adding some extra oomph to the roots, try a root spray like Christophe Robin's volume mist.
Red Hair

2022 has been the year of Euphoria, we knew after one episode the beauty was once again going to be a focus. This latest season we bore witness to many a pigmented cat eye, but it's the real life looks of the stars of the show that have had us swooning. First Sydney Sweeney came out with her freshly reddened strands and now we have our queen Barbie Ferreira donning her new red look. For a fresh approach opt for a strawberry blonde, with some face framing highlights.
