If you ever needed evidence that Australian musicians are in a league of their own, you only had to tune into yesterday's National Indigenous Music Awards ceremony. Hosted on triple j, Double J, triple j Unearthed and The National Indigenous Radio Service, the 2021 NIMAs were a testament to First Nations talent and artistry. Here are the winners.
After being postponed earlier in the year and revised as a radio broadcast, organisers struck a successful format that flowed freely into the ears of many. All who tuned in were guided through the ceremony by Yuin man Nooky and Gomeroi presenter Karla Ranby. Between the two of them we were graced with intimate performances, like Electric Fields moving rendition of From Little Things Big Things Grow and Tilly Tjala Thomas singing her original song, Ngai Yulku Nhiina.
When it came to slinging out the awards, you'll be unsurprised to find out that The Kid LAROI took home 'Artist of the Year Award' and that Miiesha claimed 'Song of the Year' for Damaged. Also, prolific Indigenous musician Kev Carmody was recognised for his influential body of work which includes From Little Things Big Things Grow, and as a result was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
